Joe Strummer Esquire, Relic
The Legendary Joe Strummer played guitar with an intensity that cut like a knife with raw energy and passion in every intense swipe at the strings. He was the embodiment of Punk culture and a crucial component to its development. His style was direct, honest, and empowering to the listener which would create legions of die-hard fans around the world.
Best known for his work with The Clash, Strummer and his bandmates were a major part of creating punk rock and has inspired countless other bands to this day. Strummer commanded the stage like a fiercely determined punk rock commander and blasted songs out of his guitar like a machine gun. His weapon of choice for the London Calling and Combat Rock era was his tried and true Fender Esquire®. A perfect match for his stripped down, no nonsense delivery, the Esquire was the perfect tool for Strummer to hammer away on show after show working out angst and often having his drummer play on the strings with drumsticks during songs. The guitar was one of Strummer’s favorites and appeared on many of their most famous performances especially in the latter years of the band.
Features include a 2-piece offset seam alder body, with a 1-ply eggshell pickguard, flat-sawn maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, 9.5” radius, medium jumbo frets, a ’59 “C” shaped profile and Schaller mini tuning machines. A top-load/string-through Tele® bridge assembly is set up with a Josefina hand-wound 55/56 bridge pickup wired up to a 3-way switch and a ‘59 Esquire wiring. Also includes certificate of authenticity, strap and a custom pink anvil case with “Strummer” stencil and leopard print lining.
JASON SMITH
A Custom Shop veteran and son of longtime Fender R&D legend Dan Smith, Jason Smith grew up on Fender—“It has always been in my family,” he said, “And I was always extremely interested in everything my father did.”
Born in Rochester, N.Y., and raised in California, Smith remembers meeting guitar greats from about age five on through his father’s work with Fender—Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Beck and Robben Ford, to name only a few. He went to his first big rock concert at age six—Rush—and Smith remembers going backstage with his dad and meeting Geddy Lee after the show. Before he was even in his teens, Smith was going to see Pink Floyd, ZZ Top and many other major artists.
Rock music and Fender are part of his DNA. Smith joined the Fender Custom Shop in 1995, and in 2006 completed a five-year apprenticeship under acclaimed Senior Master Builder John English. Among many diverse projects with English, Smith worked on a pair of double-neck Stratocaster guitars for Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo. He has since crafted fine instruments for players and acts including John 5, Michael Landau, Flea, Josh Klinghoffer, Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, Reggie Hamilton, Linkin Park, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Neon Trees and many others.
