SOME HISTORY

Norman and Roger Pugh founded Metronome Music in 1957. The store was originally located at 1354 Lexington Avenue, just south of Logan Road in a strip mall. The original size was 1200 square feet. The store specialized in band instruments, records, a few pianos, and sheet music. Norm felt that any guitar other than a classical was not a legitimate instrument. He was a trombone player, so what could you expect!

Larry Miller bought the store and inventory in October of 1962. He immediately built more teaching studios and added guitars to the inventory. At that time, there were no used guitars available, and the problem was not selling guitars, but getting them! The Beatles arrived and with them we acquired the Vox line of guitars and amplifiers. This was a very significant event in the early years.

The following year, the store added its first full-time employee. Fred Switzer was an outstanding trumpet/cornet player, and was instrumental in increasing the size of the store. The store was primarily renting and selling band instruments, guitars, guitar amps, and drums. About 1968, the store moved to a larger building at 827 Lexington Avenue and expanded to 3600 square feet. The move allowed us to add pianos, drum sets, and PA systems. Eventually, the store moved to it's current location in a building that had previously been a Top Value Stamp redemption center. Although the store showed significant growth in the new location, the 8,000 square feet proved to be too large. In January, 1989, the building was divided, and Metronome Music moved into half of the building. However, with the growth in business, we returned to the use of the entire building in 1994.

Metronome Music has developed an oustanding reputation for quality and value of merchandise, and an honest dealing with it's customers.
